Wow. I'm so glad I found Janet Kagan. I really like her work.I wasn't surprised when Janet turned out to be a James Schmidt fan. She has the same lightness of touch and wonderful twists and turns. The Collected Kagan is a set of good stories. There were only a few ho-hums, "Faith of the Month Club," "From the Dead Letter File." The rest of the stories range from very good to just lovely. "Winging It," "Fighting Words," and "Christmas Wingding" are my favs. I can also recommend her novels "Mirabelle" and "Hellspark." I hope she writes more soon.Product details

I liked finding a new author I hadn't seen before. Good writing style and nice humor. Most of the stories were satisfying except the first one was way more dark than I had anticipated. I will read Ms Kagan again.
I've enjoyed Janet Kagen's stories since I first discovered them in Asimov's SF magazine. This bouquet of stories was a happy find - though I'm sad there will be no more...
I came across works in here that I never knew existed, which makes me very happy. She was an amazing writer.
There is something for every scifi fan in this book. Several of the stories cracked me up. A few made me cry. The saddest part is that Janet Kagan is no longer with us to write more. This book is entertainment.
Janet Kagan is a fabulous writer and I was delighted to see her collection of short stories. If you enjoyed her novel 'Mirabile' you will love this. The characters are incredibly human even when they are not human. Wit, compassion, humor are true trademarkso f these stories.
Others have done good reviews. Mainly I am writing this to ask Baen Books PLEASE PUBLISH THIS IN HARDBACK. I've loved Janet Kagan since I first found a paperback copy of Mirabile. Eventually I found her website (still maintained as of last month), but longed to read all her works. This is a start, but I want my own hardback copy of this collected short stories. Please, Baen?
I have been waiting for a long time for a collection of Janet Kagan's stories. Although the quality is uneven (as with most collections of stories written over time), the best stories are very good indeed. Encompassing both fantasy and science fiction, the stories showcase her appealing characters and interesting plot twists. There is one rather risque one about filming a porn movie -- with a stray unicorn (he's not in the movie), so be warned. The opening story, a variation on the witch hunt theme, is uncharacteristically grim. Most of the remainder are much more light-hearted. As far as I can tell, the only stories not included are the linked stories about the planet Mirabile, which appear in a separate book by that title (which I highly recommend). Overall, a good reading experience.
