A #1 best seller in Post-Apocalyptic fiction!

Reeling from the events of The Oasis, the doctor retreats to the Eastern Shore of Maryland, living a hermit’s life. But in time he begins to rediscover his humanity, through the companionship of Addy, a faithful dog, and Alain, a mysterious refugee from another walled city. When tragic events again consume his life and threaten his closest friends, will he give in to despair or find a new reason to carry on?

Self Publishing Reviews 5 stars "While a book about outcasts banding together may seem as overdone a trope as zombie fiction itself, once again I have to assure anyone reading this that the author, Keith Soares, is in all ways a step above those expectations in his ideas and his execution... I don't recommend reading this book; I recommend reading every book this author publishes, as I have no doubt he will continue raising the bar."

IndieReader Approved 4.5 stars "Soares paints a frightening, realistic picture of life in a post-apocalyptic world... It’s refreshing to read a book in this vein that allows the reader to explore a protagonist’s anguish without relying on a flat, twenty-something hero."

Reader Reviews

"This book should come with a warning You will not be going anywhere for a while once you read the first chapter."

"'The Hopeless Pastures' is a worthy sequel to 'The Oasis of Filth' — a story that stands on its own, but also expertly sets up the final chapter to this compelling series."

"Boy does the author deliver. The dramatic arcs of the story are like riding a great rollercoaster."

"Soares does a masterful job of making the situations and outcomes seem eerily plausible, which heightens the creepiness factor and suspense immensely for me."

The Oasis of Filth Part 2 The Hopeless Pastures eBook Keith Soares

A sequel to the uncommon zombie apocalypse short story The Oasis of Filth, The Hopeless Pastures by Keith Soares is a second part of a trilogy set in a United States no longer “united”.

As the mysterious plague RL2013 pushes humanity to the brink of extinction, where governments ensconce and bury the remaining citizens in distant walled cities. No phone lines, no internet, no questions, no disobedience, the world is painted as a fearful and empty place outside of the clinically-white walls of each city, as modern-day lepers nicknamed “zombies” emerge from places decried as “dirty”, and people are shut into hopeless routines. Our view into this latent and undying near-future is provided in the memoirs of a doctor, former resident of a walled city, on the whole content with his day-to-day life until the tale of an escape in the form of an “Oasis” starts becoming more than a fairy story as one of his few remaining acquaintances is chased down by the government.

Set after his escape, and the loss of his only remaining human interest and seeming final hope, the doctor has now fled to Maryland to live alone and free of his disturbed and bleak past, until once again his faith is stoked by another refugee from the walled cities, Alain, and kept company by a forgotten dog, Addy. Meeting at a crossroads of their lives, they pause to discuss the nature of this world, of humanity, and together they slowly begin to believe in better, in each other, with talks of cures and salvation running beyond idle chatter.

While a book about outcasts banding together may seem as overdone a trope as zombie fiction itself, once again I have to assure anyone reading this that the author, Keith Soares, is in all ways a step above those expectations in his ideas and his execution. A short read at around 120 pages the book is paced excellently in rounded, digestible chapters that are well distinguished from each other, and the quiet, reverent tone that encapsulates the majority of the story doesn’t outlive itself to become dreary. The tired but never bitter doctor is an intricate character described in few words and many actions, always believable without being boring, and even more impressive the same can be said about most of the other characters. Cast Away managed it with a volleyball, The Life of Pi with a tiger; in no way do a few humans – give or take – seem too little. Almost every word is well chosen, and every scene regardless of whether someone dies or sits alone in a broken-down RV, is effective and engaging, never without a point. The theme has shifted from a more rebellious adventure against The Man, to a more introspective account of loss and renewal; a “Two Towers” leading to “The Return of the King”. Flickers of a final resurgence can be felt growing all through the second half of the book, and while it doesn’t quite lead anywhere, it does leave me on edge to read a continuation without the disappointment of a cheap cliffhanger.

I don’t recommend reading this book; I recommend reading every book this author publishes, as I have no doubt he will continue raising the bar in the third part of this short series and in any new work he may continue on to. This series is a craft of someone who has not been afraid to keep their ideas on a slow boil until they were ready to throw themselves into writing it exactly as it needed to be, and it glistens with the mark of a skilled storyteller. If this isn’t a high enough recommendation for you to pick this book up yourself then I’m not sure what is.

Whether a happy ending is truly in the works or not is completely in question, and once again the book’s ending is left reasonably unresolved keeping the reader hungry for more. I have no doubts that the final installment will be an interesting one.

The Oasis of Filth Part 2 The Hopeless Pastures eBook Keith Soares Reviews

Being a Marylander, I liked having our Eastern Shore as the setting. That being said, I would not want to be there and have to deal with what the main character deals with. But, boy did he draw me in! This was a story I could not put down until I finished, and then I was upset I reached the end. Hurry up with the third installment!
Really enjoyed the first and second books in this series! I have read many books in this genre so they have to be different to keep me interested. This series has done that. Highly recommend!
I'm stunned at how good this story is. Part one was pretty good, and made me want to continue the story, but part two was so much better. These characters have come alive for me. I've been afraid for them. I've laughed and cried, and most of all, I've worried about them. To say that I have enjoyed this story is a gross understatement. I can't wait for part three. The final chapter. Yet, I also dread it. I do not want this story to end.. Yes, I would recommend this story and author.
I bought this second book right after I finished the first one. I was just as taken with it as with the previous one. My heart has made a pretty big investment in the story so I'll close and go purchase the third book! Great story and characters.
This series adds a different twist onto the standard zombie world – where the zombies aren’t quite zombies and the lead character is real rather than Rambo. It has a satisfying mix of suspense, drama, and action which will appeal to the more cerebral zombie fan. Storytelling in the first person, from an as of yet unnamed protagonist, adds a good blend of familiarity with a touch of mystery. This 2nd installment is a worthy addition to the 1st, and I’m very much looking forward to the 3rd.
These days, many trilogies follow what I consider the "sagging suspension bridge" trajectory book one introduces you to a world of characters, plots, and possibilities, while book three brings to conclusion in often thrilling fashion the rising tension and mystery that you know approaches. However, the second book in trilogies seems to bear the weight of a story that should have telegraphed only its key attributes to the first and third installments. Second books so often lack substance, excitement, and insight. It's as if someone tells aspiring authors, "Duologies are so mid-20th century...trilogies are all the rage today! Just fabricate a book two." Thus, like so many sagging bridges, you fall to a low in the middle of the journey. Worse, some are so mediocre that you find the suspense cables breaking as you cross the mid-point, only to find yourself "Indiana Jones-ing" into the ravine's far-side cliff. In other words, you abandon the series.

I'm thrilled to say Soares has, at a minimum, built us a terrific beam bridge - no rescue whip required! Racing right out of the conclusion of it's predecessor, The Oasis of the Filth, the Hopeless Pastures finds us further peeling away the layers of the sweet onions that (I'll just put it this way to avoid series spoilers) are the main characters. I particularly appreciated the longer periods of geographic stillness in which Soares dug deeper into the characters histories, their struggles, and their psyches. As an added perk also evident in book one, Soares' real life knowledge of the book's setting is evident, lending a sense of authenticity to the details.

Every page of The Hopeless Pastures seemed to provide forward momentum in some respect while never rushing the plot or muscling aside the subtleties of character development. Finally, like it's predecessor, this installment's conclusion leaves you saying "maaaaan!" in the quiet of your mind while you scramble to purchase and download the third and final book in the series.

Hopeless Pastures was a delightful and quick read that packed substance and excitement in a perfectly sized package. Kudos to Soares for a job well done.
