"Traitors' Gate" (2009) is the third entry of a projected seven-volume fantasy, and also the final book of the `Crossroads Trilogy.' "Spirit Gate" (2006) began the trilogy and "Shadow Gate" (2008) was the middle volume.

I wish this book had begun with a plot summary of the first two `Gates' plus short biographies of the reeves (circuit court judges who ride gigantic eagles), debt slaves, priests, hierodules (some of whom are ninja-prostitute-spies), nonhumans, warriors, and merchants/clan members who play important roles in the trilogy. It was hard to remember the multiple subplots, and the adventures/romances of about a hundred characters, including nine who died and came back to life as super-human Guardians. Author Kate Elliott skips from character to character to tell her story, so there is no consistent viewpoint to anchor the plot.

Nor does the trilogy settle into a particular location. Armies march back and forth, caravans shuttle between the Hundred and the Sirniakan Empire, Guardians pop in and out of the story on flying horses, and of course, the reeves and their eagles are in constant motion.

Basically, the Guardians once protected a land called `the Hundred' and dispensed justice, but in Volume II ("Shadow Gate"), the reader begins to learn that some of the Guardians are evil. In this volume, the evil Guardians have recruited an army that is pillaging, slaughtering, and generally terrorizing the Hundred. There are a few good Guardians left, but they are passive spectators.

The reeves have finally realized that the evil Guardians are turning the people of the Hundred against them. Many reeves are slaughtered, along with their giant eagles, before they begin to organize and arm themselves. Joss (a primary character from Vols I and II) is appointed Commander of the reeves. He is still emotionally entangled with Marit, a former reeve who was murdered and returned to life as a Guardian, and a hierodule/assassin named Zubaidit.

The story of Captain Anji and his wife, Mai continues in Volume III. He and his band of mercenary soldiers (outcasts from the Sirniakan Empire) are the Hundred's only organized defenders against the armies of the evil Guardians.

Commander Joss and Captain Anji both learn how to kill the seemingly immortal Guardians, but the two friends begin to have a falling-out on whether the Guardians should be killed. They also differ on the role of the reeves and their eagles: should they continue on as judges, or should they become the `air force' of Anji's army?

You may be surprised at how this conflict is resolved.

I am looking forward to Volume IV. As complicated and messy as this triple-decker fantasy has been, some of the characters have come to life for me (especially Anji and Mai) and I would like to be a part of their further adventures.
